Updates to Version 3.0

  • Upgraded backpack straps
  • InReach pocket
  • Increased DWR (durable water repellent)

After talking to hundreds of riders around the world, and combining their feedback with our personal wants and needs, we decided to design the Nomax's storage space differently than the traditional 'toaster' shape. Instead, we divided the space into six vertical layers, each with a specific purpose. We conducted research on the types of items that riders typically store in their tank bags and discovered that most of them were small. By using a vertical layout, we were able to maximize the use of space without increasing the height of the bag.

The top layer of the Nomax has three columns of MOLLE webbing made from die-cut Hypalon. These columns can be used to mount various items such as our rain-proof MOLLE Map Pocket, Navigator Cell Phone Pocket, or MOLLE-compatible multi-tool. You can customize the top layer of the Nomax to suit your individual travel needs with the help of MOLLE webbing.

Beneath the MOLLE webbing, the next layer is an expandable beavertail. The beavertail can be used to quickly store things like sunglasses, gloves, snacks, or even a small DSLR camera. If you decide to use it for your DSLR, we've placed webbing loops on the beavertail side bellows, allowing you to directly clip the D-rings on your camera case to the bag. Inside the beavertail, we've also included a pocket for an InReach or SPOT, and a gated clip to keep your GPS/camera/beacon lanyards secure, so nothing falls out if your bike takes a tumble.

The third layer zips back into your lap and is specifically designed to help you organize small items like charging cables, pens, change, batteries, earplugs, chapstick, passport, and bike documents. This layer includes six mesh pockets, three elastic cable holders, two pen holders, and a fleece-lined glasses pocket to keep everything in its place. No more tangled mess of miscellaneous items floating around in the bottom of your tank bag - now everything has a designated home.

The fourth layer is a large open compartment featuring plenty of space for bulkier items like spare gloves, wallet, CCW, and food. There are two large mesh pockets (one with sidewalls and one flat), which are available if you need them but compress out of the way if you don't. Also, for contact lens wearers, on the foam-reinforced sidewall, there's a removable lens case holder, which can be rotated to keep the cases vertical depending on the orientation of the bag.

Under the main compartment, is a long, flat pocket designed to hold a 2.5L hydration reservoir, which comes included with the Nomax. If you're traveling in a warmer climate or on a long-distance trip, you can move the weight of your drinking water from your back to the bike to help you stay hydrated without adding extra weight to your backpack. If you'd rather keep the Nomax as tight as possible to the bike or maximize space in the main compartment, you can remove the reservoir and store it elsewhere on the bike.

The sixth and final layer of the Nomax houses a quick-stash spot for two sewn-on, crushable backpack straps. Simply unclip the Nomax from the bike, pull out the backpack straps, and clip them to the D-rings at the bottom of the bag. The Nomax converts into a fully functioning hydration pack. The side straps, which normally connect the Nomax to the bike, now become your waist strap. We use these backpack straps on dual sport trips all the time, from morning hikes to running errands in town. It looks, feels, and functions like a normal backpack.

The Nomax includes a waterproof rain cover, with a welded-seam top panel and sealed seams on the side to keep your belongings dry in a heavy downpour. There's a stash spot for the rain cover on the top of the bag and a leash so it doesn't get lost. Also, hidden away in two of the zipper pulls, you’ll find a SIM card tool, a storage compartment, and a safety whistle for emergencies.

FITMENT & ASSEMBLY
  • View Installation Instructions PDF
  • View Nomax Footprint PDF
  • Due to the Nomax's long torso, it may not fit on smaller dual sport bikes.
  • We recommend rigging the Nomax as far forward as possible – it's not uncommon for the top of the bag to extend over the handlebars on some bikes.
  • Our universal mounting harness makes it easy to swap between other Mosko tank bags and is also interchangeable between bikes.

Excellent solution

The Nomax easily fits my 2014 BMW F800GS, for reference. I’ve used this on two trips so far, one being involving day-rides along gravel and backroads and the other involving highway speed touring for hundreds of miles. Having an excellent solution for on-the-move hydration in both these scenarios is a must, especially if you’re recovering from a few drinks last night at the campsite. It’s amazing how much water you’ll drink when it’s available. 2 Liters is right about the sweet-spot, as this bag is already the largest in Mosko’s range.

In addition to the hydration function, this bag has myriad organizational options. I use the smaller elastic/webbed slots for sunscreen, stickers, credit card, chap stick, and a leatherman. The large storage area is used for my wallet and maybe my 2A (working on an elegant solution for that). The “beaver tail” section is a bit lost on me, as it isn’t quite big enough to stash my gloves and its straps must be undone to fully open any other area.

When going into a gas station or food stop, I pop the 4 clips and bring the bag with me containing all my valuables. While the backpack straps are nice, if stored them elsewhere on trips. I’ll either use one to create a sling bag or just used the mounting straps as an even smaller sling strap.

Dealing with the folks at Mosko has been great. Despite some shipping issues, them made everything right as fast as possible for an upcoming trip. I recently met a couple of their guys at the BMWMOA Rally. They were the nicest and most helpful vendors there, which helped make my decision to buy a Basilisk jacket and pant setup from them. Great company to do business with, as they’re always innovating.

Nomax Tank Bag (V3.0)

Elegant and efficient design, great gear from a mastercraft gear company

A modern marvel of engineering. As a gear nut I have lots of gear and seldom review them. This is a masterpiece and I can't say enough about it. As I've used it for about 3 months now and done several day long rides with it in cold and hot conditions. It's great for maintaining hydration and can operate as storage for camera gear, essentials, and comfort items. I just recently used it as a backpack and it was great and can easily carry my helmet and gear on my back which is amazing to prevent theft and bring your valuables with you while having your hands free. I also attached their small Molle bag which has a quick release to the top allowing me to leave the bag and bring my camera, wallet etc. with me.

Some future improvements suggestions would be to 1. have the bag natively waterproof without the rain cover. 2.add a quick release for the whole bag (similar to the small molle) from the bag to the motorcycle padded backing allowing you to just rip off the hook and loop without having to detach from 4 points. 3. Have a dedicated Garmin Messenger or Inreach holder for the top of the bag instead of having it under the top layer of fabric for better reception and visibility.

Again, can't say enough good about this tank bag. It's large but does not get in the way of body position off road, for me. It's really perfect as it is and can be added onto or adjusted as needed for your use. Dream job would be a gear tester for Mosko Moto because they are truly innovative and intelligent design and consistently make elegant design decisions. I can't say how many times I've thought some of the features of the bag were weird or unnecessary to be converted later to a big fan of that particular design decision.
